Going Green Doesn't Have to Cost You an Arm or Leg

When you decide on going green to not only save money, but to save our environment you don’t have to do everything at once. By thinking small, you can go green over the long run. By doing one room at a time it may be the best way, and pick the hottest room in your home, or the room most used during those hot summer months.

In what ways can you go green in your home a little bit at a time? Choose wisely and consider several options along the way. When you find one option works better than another, follow that option as you deal with all of your windows.

If you find that a couple of options will better serve you, try stacking them. For instance when you install shutters on the inside of one of your rooms, and still the sun warms that room hotter than you want. Try adding an awning to the outside of the window. It could be one that folds up or down, and it could be lighter material like canvas or an aluminum awning that’s permanent will serve as well.

Exterior blinds will stop the sun from heating up your window that will transfer the heat right into your home. Most of those roll up when you want the sun to shine in.

Light colored interior blinds, drapes or shades work well too. That’s because light colors reflect the sun and keeps the sun from the interior of your home. Darker colors absorbs the heat and the heat ends up inside.

Louvered Shutters or Adjustable Blinds give you the most control simply by opening or closing the louvers. Some prefer exterior shutters that do the same.

Tight fitting insulated shades will also help to control heat loss, and it will also keep the heat inside during the winter.

Shade Trees don’t get the credit they deserve. Plant wisely and your shade trees will keep the sun off your home, but in the winter when the trees lose their leaves, sun enters the home.

Consult a contractor, interior designer, or a contractor that is a green consulting firm. They will help keep you in the green direction, and you’ll find the many ways that don’t cost that much more than simply changing the window treatment.

You’ll find that you don’t have to go through the entire scope of your home, but by wise choices they can help you get to that end result.

Exterior Shutters Made in the USA

Many Americans today look especially for products that are made in the USA. They want not only superior workmanship, and top quality products, but a company that will discuss any problems that may materialize during the entire procedure.

Our customers wouldn’t appreciate talking to a person that doesn’t comprehend our language or the problems that may exist when they receive inferior materials in their exterior shutters. When homeowners want the best for their family and homes, they will search for the best, and made in the USA passes that test.

Price of course is often a prime consideration, but when compared with the final product, they prefer to pay a bit more for quality with the assurance that they will not have to worry about shipping damage, lead, or other hazardous ingredients.

The United States has manufacturing regulations that ensure the products made here are safe without those common problems from offshore and outsourced materials arriving on our shores where transportation is their highest consideration. In other words, the inferior material and low cost labor, keeps the price lower and you end up with a substandard product.

A company that hires workers that can hand craft solid prime wood fixed louvered exterior shutters will have pride in the end product. They insist on top quality in their materials as well and the exterior shutters that you install on your home will bring pride to your home.

That pride will extend not only to the quality of shutter, but the fact that hard working Americans, that are fairly paid, made the exterior shutters that added the new curb appeal to your property. You’ll feel that you did your part in bringing manufacturing back here. The appeal will also extend to the value of your home.

When you order products from a company that has their base here in America you help to keep that company in business. You also know that your purchases help to pay the workers that work there.

You’ll also know that the order you place with an American company will be exactly what you ordered, and they have full authority over every single thing they manufacture. Companies that outsource their shutter production have no control. The hand crafted exterior shutters made in the USA will stand out in your neighborhood. Your home will have a finished designer look that shows pride of ownership with a product that you know will last through rain or shine, and nothing shouts louder than Made in the USA.

Shutters: What Wood Is Best?

While it's true that modern shutters are often constructed from a wide assortment of different materials, the professionals who construct them and the homeowners who purchase them always seem to fall back on shutters made of basswood. Basswood has been consistently popular almost professionals and homeowners because of its consistent color, extremely low sap content, and it's tight grain structure.

Professionals prefer to construct shutters from basswood because of its workable nature. Professionals can carve, sand, and shaped basswood into some elegant and intricate designs. Homeowners on the other hand loved basswood shutters because of their classic elegance and their eye-catching appeal.

While some homeowners and even professionals may construct/purchase shutters made of vinyl, cedar, oak, among other materials, basswood will likely remain the most popular for quite some time. It's very difficult to top the luxurious aesthetics basswood shutters bring to a home.

Should you have any questions regarding basswood shutters please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance!

Shutter Colors And Stains

When people begin shopping for new shutters they are often surprised when they learn that custom-made modern shutters are available in nearly an unlimited number of colors and/or stains. While it's common knowledge among most individuals that new shutters are available in white, black, and a natural wood color, many are pleasantly surprised when they are told that they can have their new shutters can come in the color of their choice.

Even those homeowners who aren't too keen on standout colors for the new shutters will still have a myriad of different options available when it comes to stain finishes. With everything from dark stain to light stain in every shade in between available, even the most fastidious of homeowners will have no problem finding a stain that suits them and their home.

What homeowners must keep in mind however is that while shutters are available in a wide variety of different colors and stains, not all styles of shutters are and those that are maybe a bit more expensive than those that are not. Of course anyone interested differently colored or stained shutters should first contact us in order to find out what colors are available for which styles and how those colors and styles factor into their budget.

Custom Window Shutters

Customized window shutters have changed as much as our country has changed throughout the years. Originally they installed the plantation shutters over open windows (without glass) and they opened completely or closed completely as well. They provided security and privacy, but afforded a way for the inhabitants of the home to control the weather.

They installed the original shutters on the outside of their homes. You can still do that of course, but many custom window shutters have made their way into the interior of the home. You’ll see those custom shutters throughout the home and sometimes they even close off one room from another by installing shutters across the doorways.

The shutters are that strong, or rather they should be. When you decide on 100% real wood custom window shutters, you’ll be amazed at their strength. When the company you choose to construct and install the custom shutters, they will tell you what works best in your home.

Without doubt, custom window shutters are way beyond simplicity. They have a beauty all their own and can be installed with other window treatments and still have the uniqueness that only they can give. From heavy draperies to sheer curtains your rooms will emerge from their drab existence to an elegant setting where your pride will shine through. Even when you let them stand alone, they bring the final touches to your room and are very pleasing to any observer.

The custom shutters still provide security and privacy and even if you live where four seasons don’t exist, they control the heat escaping or entering your residence or work place. They mount those wide louvers into a solid wooden frame, and the louvers on the shutters are between two and three inches wide. There is hardly any resemblance to those old-fashioned venetian blinds.

The air can flow freely with the shutters open wide, or when you place the louvers in the open position. They open in any position between open and close and can provide that privacy simply by making adjustments in the louvers.

The variety of styles and window treatment will astonish you. No matter the size or function of your windows, the custom window shutters will fill that window entirely. The strength, beauty and amount of options will convince you that you have made the right decision.

Whether you want one window, a room full or your entire home covered with quality customized window shutters, their superiority over the competitors will ease your mind and you’ll realize that you made the correct decision.

Quality Custom Shutters

If you’re considering purchasing shutters for your windows, you might consider investing your time and energy to find out the difference between 100% solid wood shutters compared to poly or vinyl. Many simply call the vinyl plastic, and that in itself turns many people away.

One hundred percent wood doesn’t always mean the same thing either. Solid wood does not include particleboard that consists of composites that are manufactured from wood shavings and then pressed together. If that doesn’t bother you, look up the process online.

Quality custom shutters, made from solid 100% wood, are not manufactured, and not glued together to create the look of 100% wood. However they will not stand up to the scrutiny of customers who demand high quality 100% wood.

Now that you know the wood to look for, check out the paint on the shutters. The top quality shutter will have 3 coats of base coat and 2 coats of topcoat. Many companies paint their shutters with the louvers closed together. When that happens, the paint is not even and moisture can penetrate the shutters. The correct way to paint the louvers is to paint them before they assemble them. Otherwise the paint does not seal totally so check the edges of the louvers. Staining should be done in similar ways.

The length of the staples used in construction should be 5/8” to 3/4” and when a company cuts corners on the staples, you end up with a product that will not last. Another way to cut corners is by using dowels instead of cutting a solid piece of wood and fit it together like a puzzle. The dowels are easier and faster to install, but will not stand up to the test of time.

Using catches is cheaper than using magnets that are normally recessed into the wood and placed on the backside of the shutter. You should check out the hinge. A quality hinge will not be a butterfly hinge that is cheaper and easier to install. Full panel hinges will be stronger and hold up much longer.
We could go into the making of the vinyl, or plastic shutters, but because of space, we’ll just mention the things that the salespeople claim make them better than wood. They say price is the biggest concern, and many would agree that their customers don’t demand quality, but are interested only in the price factor.

They also claim that the vinyl will not yellow, crack, and never need painting. Some of that may be true, but certainly not all. Some of the vinyl shutters are reinforced with aluminum, and that would make them stronger, but not all manufacturers use it.

So your best bet is to learn the facts before you decide. Check out the materials on both the 100% wood (not composites), and the vinyl. Another great modifier is to find out how long the company has been in business. You certainly don’t want a fly by night operator, but you do need to do your own homework.

Shutters And UV Protection

Due to their cost many homeowners often remain apprehensive about purchasing new shutters for their home only because they worry that they won't last. This is especially true of homeowners who live in climates that receive harsh sunlight and are extremely hot in the spring and summer.

While this is certainly a legitimate concern for homeowners, what many are surprised to learn is that the vast majority of modern shutters are protected by a special UV coating that's placed over and/or under the finish of shutters. This UV coating prevents the light we don't see coming from the sun from destroying the beautiful finish and/or paint on shutters. It also protects the material that shutters are made from as well which should give homeowners peace of mind enough to follow through with a purchase.

Of course homeowners should be cautious when shopping for new shutters because as mentioned previously not all shutters are coated with some sort of UV protection. Those that are not will quickly fall prey to the suns ultraviolet rays and will begin to lose their color and may even begin to crack, rot, and peel.

Should you have any questions about UV coating for your new shutters please be sure to contact us so that we may be of assistance!

Pushing New Window Projects To The Next Level

When a homeowner decides it is time for new windows there are great many things to consider. There is of course the time frame in which they want the project to be completed, cost, whether or not to hire a contractor, and of course a myriad of design choices to to chose from as well. As new windows in a home bring with it a great number of benefits, homeowners engaging in such a project may wish to consider taking things to the next level.

Any homeowner that has purchased and is having new windows installed in their home should seriously consider adding new window decor to push the project to its limits. There are more than just one or two reasons homeowners may want to consider adding some decor to their new windows, all of which bring with them a number of different benefits.

The first and perhaps most obvious reason homeowners should include decor in their new window project is for the sake of appearances. Aesthetically pleasing window decor will work in conjunction with a homes new windows to create an atmosphere that homeowner can be proud of. Furthermore selecting the right window decor during this type of project can also leave a favorable impression on visitors.

Not surprisingly, many homeowners also add new window decor to their recently installed windows for functionality. Purchasing and installing the right type of window decor can allow homeowners to better control the climate within their home. In many cases homeowners will notice a dramatic reduction in the costs associated with running the heat and air units after new window decor has been installed. Moreover the right type of window decor allows homeowners to seize control over the amount of light that enters and exits a room.

Although it is third on this list, price is something that homeowners should be considering right from the get-go, though they should never let it deter them. The costs associated with new window decor can sometimes be a bit high but considering that the purchase and installation of new windows isn't exactly inexpensive most homeowners should have plenty of room in their project budget for the inclusion of new decor that complements their windows.

Any homeowner who has opted to have new windows installed in their home and wants to go all the way by adding new decor to those windows should seriously consider working with a professional so as to ensure that their home gets exactly the type of decor that it needs. There are also many alternatives to window decor that professionals can recommend should a homeowners budget not allow for some of the pricier selections.

Modern Plantation Shutters

When you think of plantation shutters, you, like many others, believe they date back before the Civil War. Plantation designates the homes built by slaves in the south during that period. Modern plantation shutters bear no resemblance and there are many more choices. The shutters add a permanent addition and the value of your property increases exponentially.

Your first choice would be the exterior or interior type of shutter. Now we’re going to write about the interior plantation shutter even though both types operate in the same way. However the exterior shutters can be permanently installed and have no function other than to add beauty and individualism to your property.

The interior shutter still provides privacy as well as protection when they are closed. They are easy to use and when you want more for your windows, you can add draperies or curtains without obstructing their use.

When you desire painted shutters to blend with the same color as the room where you install them, the choice would be wood. Vinyl shutters often come in white or off-white colors, but you can change the color of paint on vinyl modern plantation shutters as often as you paint your room. They may need a special paint to adhere.

Modern plantation shutters also give you the choice to control whether or not light enters your room. When you close the louvers tight the room becomes darker, and you can open the louvers while the shutter is still sitting against your window. So you choose from dark to light and all the way in between.

So besides privacy and protection you’ll find the modern plantation shutter comparatively easy to install. They are easy to use and they don’t just sit there collecting dust but when they do, they’re easy to clean. The modern dusters that don’t rely on feathers work well, and when they need extra cleaning a damp cloth works well especially on the vinyl shutters.

If you’re unsure about the installation of your shutters that will be permanently installed, you may want to call in a professional. One good thing about a professional installation, if they make a mistake while measuring, they will order new shutters and of course there will be no charge for the error.

When you do the job yourself, you may be paying double and the increase in costs won’t be absorbed.

Unusual size windows will be no problem and the advice you receive from a professional will be well worth your efforts.

Cleaning Your Plantation Shutters

Though they are beautiful when they are first installed, the luster of plantation shutters can quickly be lost to dust, dirt, and even mold due to a homeowners neglect. Now given the fact that some homeowners spend an exuberant amount of money on their plantation shutters you'd think that they'd clean them often but many often don't clean them as well as they should simply because they don't know how.

The truth of the matter however is that cleaning plantation shutters is no different than cleaning most other things in a home. They will need to be dusted regularly to avoid buildup and will occasionally need to be wiped down with a damp cloth so as to retain their shine and healthy looking gloss. Harsh chemicals should never be utilized when cleaning plantation shutters of any kind as these can damage both the shutters themselves and their finishes.

Keeping plantation shutters looking good for years and even decades at a time takes only a small amount of effort and any homeowner that remains unsure of how to clean them or has shutters that need some extra attention should contact a professional in order to find out what the best way to proceed might be.

Should you have any questions regarding your shutters or how to keep them looking great please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance!

Shutter Colors And Selection

So you've decided that your latest home improvement project will include new shutters for all of your windows. Adding new shutters to your home not only increases resale value and will make your home seem more warm but you also get the added benefit of security and privacy. Once the decision has been made to include shutters in a home improvement project however there are a number of other decisions that you have to make prior to beginning any such project.

While many exterior shutters are available in a wide variety of both conservative and loud colors, interior shutters designed for privacy, security, and climate control are usually only available in white, black, and a variety of different shades of stain. Additionally the type of wood new shutters are constructed from will determine their color as well. You'll want to carefully choose shutters and colors that match existing decor within your home so as to avoid anything that sharply contrasts with furniture, paint, and other types of decor. If your home improvement project happens to include a new coat of interior paint the selection of shutters available to you will expand dramatically whereas homeowners who are only installing shutters as part of the project will have fewer options to choose from.

Shutters with darker stains and those made from wood with darker coloring are great for creating relaxing moods and unparalleled ambiance in rooms such as den's, studies, or game rooms. In contrast lighter colored shutters are often used by homeowners in areas or rooms that see a lot of sunlight or function as a living or family room. With so many different choices available it might be wise for you speak with an interior designer about which type will work best for you and your home. Many manufacturers can also assist by offering their assessment of your home as well.

Carefully selecting the right shutters for your home will not only ensure that they complement your home but that you'll enjoy them for many years and even decades to come. Selecting shutters haphazardly or hastily often results in less than favorable and results and the need to replace shutters not long after they've been installed. Doing it right the first time should be your modus operandi when it comes to home improvement and especially shutters.

Interior Shutters Cost & Installation

When you tire of your curtains, drapes or blinds, the first place you may visit to replace them is your local hardware store. Although they are a good place to buy, but if you’re looking for a permanent fixture for your windows, custom interior shutters will be your best bet.
The custom-made interior shutters are heavier, stronger and achieve a great deal of style as they fit your windows to a “T.” Because they make your shutters to your exact specifications no matter the shape of your windows. So what should you look for when you go online and search for a local business that specializes in interior shutters? Don’t compare apples and oranges you pay more for quality and experience.

The company that relies on their past experience and knowledge of the many different types of shutters, be they wood, vinyl, metal or even fabric, will give your windows the uniqueness you desire. Many companies make the shutters right in their own factory. Others buy from reliable sources and you will realize the difference when you see   the shutters installed correctly on your windows.

Cost is always a factor, but when you invest in a permanent fixture for your windows, don’t skimp, but purchase from reliable dealers. Suppose your custom interior shutters cost in the neighborhood of $1700. Drapes or curtains may cost just under $1000, and blinds or simple shades just under $800. You may have skimped in the past and now you feel that you wasted your money because the year old curtains no longer retain their shape and may even be faded.

You won’t have to worry about fading or sagging interior shutters. Not when you have a professional install them. Many have asked, what is the difference between interior shutters and blinds? An interior shutter swings open and has larger slats so you   control the amount of sun entering your home. A blind is operated with a rod that rotates the slats, and a heavy string to pull them open. If you have ever had blinds, you know the string breaks and the blinds can twist over time.

Educate yourself on the different types of interior shutters. Compare the quality and price with a hardware store where the shutters are pre-made, and a custom shutter where they make them to fit your windows. Then contact a reliable business, get references from their customers, check out their work and you won’t be sorry you took the time to know the difference.

Shutters: A Multitude Of Colors

Among the many different options homeowners have when it comes to new shutters, very few ever give much thought to color. While in years and even decades past shutters were more or less available only in dark and light stains, shutters are now widely available in not only different shades of stain but a wide variety of colors as well.

Homeowners will find that shutters, especially those that are custom made, are available in white, blue, red, brown, black, and any other imaginable color. This makes finding shutters that complement their home, be it the interior or exterior, a cinch. No longer must homeowners compromise and settle on a shade or color that doesn't quite fit in with their existing decor or paint.

Having such a wide variety of colors available in shutters also allows homeowners to create or add a specific mood/atmosphere to parts of their home. Homeowners can also select shutter colors that purposefully contrast with furniture, paint, or existing decor, in order to create a standout point in their home.

Should you have any questions regarding custom-made shutters or the colors they are available in please be sure to contact us so that we may be of assistance.

What Are Plantation Shutters?

There's a lot of misconceptions among homeowners who discuss shutters, in particular plantation shutters. The fact is that not many homeowners realize what plantation shutters are and are often confused with things like window blinds and even other types of shutters.

Plantation shutters differ from other types of shutters in that they generally open and close up-and-down and are far better at blocking out light and offering security and privacy then are other shutters. Plantation shutters however are still available in a wide variety of different textures, materials, colors, designs although most homeowners don't know that they are.

As mentioned previously plantation shutters can help a homeowner make their home extremely private and the inside of their home invisible to outside eyes. Moreover plantation shutters can also be used effectively to control the climate within a home trapping heat in during the winter, and keeping it out during the summer.

Should you have any questions regarding plantation shutters please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance.

Decorative Exterior Shutters

When you consider shutters old fashioned or long past their usefulness, think again. The new decorative exterior shutters that you open and close from the inside of your home are once again popular. Then when you add decorative to the exterior shutters, you have a totally new and attractive item to dress up your home both on the exterior and interior.
You can design your shutters so they are beautiful from both sides. Or you can have them permanently attached to your home. Then you can have sculpted or raised panels within the panels. There are also flat panels with carvings with many designs added to them. They also cut the panels in strips and install then in the open lattice style. Either way you can still have decorations that you’ll be proud to show off.

Functional exterior shutters can still be open or closed with the option of shutting out the harsh weather, keeping your home cooler, or securing the inside of your home from invaders. You’ll find them in areas where heavy winds assault your home; however they are popping up even in less severe climates and not only for looks. The decorative exterior shutters add a feature that is unique to your home, and your home stands out in contrast to the neighborhood.

The materials for exterior shutters are diverse as well. From the wooden, old-   fashioned ordinary shutters to the wide array of styles that take on an entirely new look. There are metal and vinyl decorative shutters that stand up well against their wooden counterparts.

To see the variety of new shutters visit a company that specializes in shutters, both interior and exterior. Just make sure they also offer the decorative exterior shutters. Take your ideas to them to see if they can use your ideas as they design the shutters to fit your homes designs, whether traditional, conservative or rustic.

You’ll find many shutters offered at your local hardware store, but you won’t see the unique decorative shutters offered by a small business that is hungry for your business. They’ll work with you to construct and design them to your taste, and pocket book. Then they’ll install them, make sure they work as promised, and you’ll be having your neighbors knocking on your door to find out where you bought them.

Lead the crowd as you upgrade your own home and show them how easy it is to start a new fashion statement.

Blinds, Shutters or Curtains?

When you’ve decided that you want to redecorate, or if your windows have no coverings, you have choices and decisions to make. Blinds, shutters and curtains are three very different coverings for windows, and the first thing you will have to decide is do you want your window covered, uncovered or slightly covered.

You will find blinds offer all of the above and depending on the time of day whether to let the sun shine in or keep it out as you adjust the blinds. To open or close them entirely, you pull on a heavy string to adjust them up or down. There are slats on blinds and they come in vertical or horizontal, and you adjust the slats or louvers with a rod that twists. Blinds are made of wood, bamboo, plastic or metal.

Shutters are similar to blinds, but heavier and they mount them on a solid frame. There are shutters made for the interior or exterior of your home, and they swing open or closed. Many attach them permanently to the outside of the home, and they serve no particular function other than beautification. The inside shutters swing away from the window and the wide louvers open and close by moving one louver that controls the rest.

Curtains come in many colors, patterns or designs, and vary from thick to sheer materials. You’ll find curtains that cross the window on a rod and you can push them open. There are types of curtains that attach to the rod on pretty hooks and you can open or close them using a string attached to the hooks. Today many modern homes drape the curtains across the top of the window, and the bottom hangs all the way to the floor. This type of curtain serves only decorative purposes.

The homeowner can easily install curtains while you must measure the blinds and shutters and they must fit your windows especially if you have unusual size windows. Local hardware stores and many department stores carry curtains and the rods to hang them.

We haven’t mentioned draperies. Draperies come in heavy material and are not as popular today as in the past. They often line the draperies mainly to keep the sun out, and they operate on a rod with hooks and strings to open and close them.

While you wash curtains either by hand or machine, draperies usually need cleaning by a professional dry cleaner. The easiest way to keep your blinds and shutters clean is to dust them regularly, and they rarely washing.

How to Clean Drapes

Before you tackle the job of cleaning your draperies or curtains read the tag to see the best method of cleaning and follow the manufacturer recommendations. The tag should also tell you what the materials are in the fabric. It doesn’t have to be expensive to clean the window treatments, but these suggestions may be of help to get the job done.

Identify the fabric and when you clean curtains, the best method may be to put them in the washing machine. Wash on hand-wash or delicate cycle with cold temperatures and a gentle cleanser. If your washer does not have the hand-wash cycle, you can always wash the curtains by hand in the sink or tub. Don’t scrub them or agitate them for any length of time. When they are clean, don’t dry them in the dryer unless the manufacturer suggests it. You can hang dry them outside but bring them in as soon as they are dry and return them to the window.

Heavy draperies are harder to clean and you should never put them in the washing machine or the dryer. You can use the vacuum attachment after you gently shake the fabric to remove some of the dust. Then vacuum them paying special attention to the folds and edges of the fabric. Work from top down, front and back, and be cautious as small spiders may live within the folds. Much will depend on the fabric of your draper-ies.

Many refuse to tackle the job themselves especially the heavy draperies. There are companies who will come to your home and pre-vacuum the draperies to remove the dust. They then spray the fabric with a dry cleaning solution before they install them in their machine that will remove ground in the dirt, pollen, allergens and even smoke.

They will then re-install them and your draperies will be clean and fresh.

Most companies will also remove your window treatments and while protecting them, dry-clean them in their establishment. They will then press the drapes and re-hang them to make sure they hang evenly and work properly.

Dust collects on the fabrics of draperies and curtains, and if you clean them regularly by vacuuming them at least every six months you prevent the allergens from entering your home. You should also prepare the area around the drapes and curtains to keep from getting any soil on the floor.

How to Clean Drapes or Curtains And Avoid dust

Hurricane Shutters Types of Storm Shutters

The types of hurricane shutters available today are far and above the storm shutters of the past. In the past, heavy wood shutters were about the only ones available, and most of those were ugly and difficult to open or close. They served the purpose of protecting the glass windows from strong winds, and even hurricanes. You could paint the wood shutters but after the wind subsides, the paint was all but gone.
Today the hard wood types vary, not as heavy, and swing easily in the open or closed position. They can also have movable slats that give you more choices in closing your windows to the heat of the summer or freezing temperatures in the winter. You can also lock them from the inside and that in itself is why many prefer them because of the added layer of security to the home.

They are attractive, come in matching or contrasting colors to your home. Today’s hurricane shutters last longer and add additional value to your home. Added features including vinyl shutters that never crack or chip, don’t attract insects like termites, and never need painting. You can wash the dirt off with a simple garden hose.

When you live in areas where the weather is usually pleasant, people still want Hurricane Shutters more for looks, than serviceable. Those shutters have stationary slats, and they attach the shutters to the home and are unmovable.

Workable Hurricane Shutters are installed on the window frame and at each side of the window. When in the closed position, they cover the window entirely. They are always installed on the outside of the home.

Shutters are available on the inside of your home, with movable slats that can be completely open or closed. They can also swing open and rest against the wall. They use them mainly to control the sun in hot or cold weather, and for privacy.

You can find Hurricane Shutters in your local hardware store and those are ready made. If your windows are not the standard size, you may have to have them custom made. There are businesses that specialize in Hurricane Shutters and all types of storm shutters. They will build the shutters to fit any type window and they will also install them for you.

If you choose wood for your shutters, just be sure to request a premium grade wood like cedar and installed with exterior grade screws or bolts and hinges.

Fauxwood Shutters?

Fauxwood shutters? Yes, fauxwood. I learn something new every day. Fauxwood shutters are for those people who love real wood, but don’t want the cost or the problems that you get from real wood. Things like cracking, warping, splitting and you won’t have to re-seal, re-oil or re-paint them either.
Fauxwood shutters are normally made from synthetic recycled materials like vinyl or a mixture of wood pulp with resins. Another advantage, you’ll be able to use them in your bathroom and kitchen where moisture gathers, but it won’t faze the fauxwood shutters. They’re cheaper too and they’re environmentally friendly, and when you tire of them they can be recycled again. What more could you want?

No one will be able to tell that they’re not real wood, and they’re more durable and more flexible than wood. They won’t fade in the harsh sun, and if you have kids who like to draw on walls or on shutters, the fauxwood shutters won’t be easy for them because the crayons won’t adhere to the fauxwood. Your pets with sharp claws will do them no harm.

When you’re looking for luxury, you’ll find it in the fauxwood shutters, and they last for years. The options vary just like the real wood shutters, and they come in a variety of colors and even imitate the popular types of wood and wood colors to match your interior motif.  They’re easy to clean with a simple damp cloth or a duster to remove clinging dust.

They have all the advantages of regular wood or vinyl shutters without the high costs or high maintenance. They open to adjust the light during the day, or close to allow privacy at night.
The fauxwood shutters come in premade designs and sizes or you can have them custom made to your qualifications. You can buy them and hang them yourself or if you prefer, you can hire a professional who will install them for you.

When you search for a contractor who specializes in custom shutters, ask them if they also provide fauxwood shutters. You will be surprised at the difference in cost while keeping the look of luxury in your home. With a professional’s touch, your home will stand out and have that curb appeal that everyone’s talking about. Just remember fauxwood is not actually new, the product has been around for a long time and is now very serviceable for use as shutters.

Roller Shutters for Homes

For years and years they installed roller shutters mainly on industrial buildings and shop fronts. They improved security and when closed were unsightly to say the least. Now there are companies that make roller shutters for private homes, and just as the industrial shutters, they not only provide security, but protect the interior of your home to prevent the transfer of heat in the summer and cold in the winter. The roller shutters operate from the inside of the home with either a motorized remote or manual control. The material used is normally steel or aluminum and they mount the shutters in an attractive cassette that they build above the frame of the window or door.

In addition to the top cassette, the essential components on all types of roller shutters are the side guides and bottom rails. The components are available in many assorted colors, but the standard colors are white, black, brown, sand, gray, cream, red, beige and green. There are some manufacturers who offer hundreds of custom colors for the roller shutters to their customers. Often the manufacturers suggest that you match your roof color.

Most people hesitated to install the roller shutters because of the aesthetics until recently when the new and improved models became available. The roller shutters no longer look cold and foreboding. Now they have a new look that blends with the rest of the home’s exterior and even interior designs. New colors give the shutters an added benefit for the homeowner.

Bars added to homes actually splashed a message to undesirables. They must have something of value in there, and the crooks easily invaded the property through the barred windows. Roller shutters offer something new to the homeowner; a product that increases their security when lowered but when raised allows the window to become visually attractive. They bolt the frame to the house and the entire shutter runs inside this frame that is almost impossible to break.

Just one of the advantages of the roller shutters is to protect the home from noise, and the peaceful interior becomes secure from the outside world. The modern roller shutters are engineered with gearing systems that are silent and roll up easily.

Find a company that is familiar with roller shutters, and they will answer all of your questions, give you a fair price, and they may even be able to frame the roller shutters onto your garage door opening.

Shutters Do It All

Individuals who want better climate control for their home, security, and privacy often resort to some form of window decor for solutions to these issues. Individuals can select from things like draperies, window blinds, shades, and of course shutters.

Save for shutters, all of the aforementioned options offer individuals concerned with these issues only limited functionality. Furthermore many of these items break easily or degrade sharply over short periods of time. Shutters on the other hand are often thought of as a "one-size-fits-all" solution for all of the aforementioned issues.

Good shutters, be them interior or exterior, can be closed completely in order to trapping heat and cool air and can also be shut tightly to keep prying eyes from seeing into the home. Shutters can also be opened slightly or completely giving individuals tremendous light control. Additionally many shutters also function as security devices and are a strong deterrent to those individuals who seek entry into a home through a window.

Should you have any questions about why shutters are the preferred choice among professional contractors for all of the aforementioned issues please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance.

Security Shutters

Once a homeowner wants to add a little more security to their home they have a number of different options available to them. The obvious options are bars on the windows, extra locks on the doors and even window blinds. None of these options however are very nice to look at nor do they do much for a home come resale time.

The one option homeowners should consider above all others is privacy shutters. There are a number of different privacy shutters on the market, some good some not so good, that homeowners can take advantage of. Thankfully the majority of these choices boast aesthetically pleasing designs and sturdy construction so homeowners don't have to sacrifice compatibility with their home for security.

Shutters that close completely and block out almost all light are fantastic at keeping prying eyes out of a home. If you can't see out then it's a safe bet that nobody can see in either. These types of shutters are great for families with small children and for individuals who simply prefer complete privacy. An added benefit of security shutters is that many of them are also built to double as a climate control device. As they are very effective at keeping heat in and out of a room, homeowners can use them to keep parts or the whole of their home comfortable.

Should you have any questions about security shutters please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance.

Interior Shutter Choices

When you consider looking into your interior shutter choices, don’t be confused with the old-fashioned venetian blinds. Their only similarity is that they cover windows. The blinds are long gone and replaced by new, modern, and decorative window coverings like the popular interior shutters.
Your choices are varied, and today even the colors can vary depending on your color schemes. Shutters offer privacy, ventilation and light control, and can insulate your home from the heat or cold. Then when you add their ability to control sound and security, what more would you want for your window coverings.

The shutters are available in different sizes or you can have them custom made to fit any window design. They come in an assortment of materials including wood, vinyl, PVC, or wood composites. The interior shutter louvers are also available in different widths from 1½” to 4½” and the louvers can be adjustable to fit your daily needs. They install the shutters permanently either to the side or on the inside of your windows. They also increase the value of your home.

Wood interior shutters can be painted and repainted to meet the changes when you remodel without modifying the entire window treatment. If you prefer to add curtains or drapes, they will enhance your windows too. However your windows will need no further ornamentation because the interior shutters stand alone in their beauty.

Once you have made the choice of material, design, color and whether custom or pre-made interior shutters, you’ll need to find the most efficient place to purchase them. If you feel confident that you will be able to install them yourself, the pre-made may be your first choice. However if you’re more inclined to have a professional make and install the shutters, you will find companies online to help you in your decision. Custom of course may cost more, but consider that they will also be of a higher quality.

Anytime you hire a contractor to do work in your home especially when you purchase custom interior shutters make sure the professional knows exactly what you want and gives you an exact price. You don’t want any surprises at the end of the process. You want a responsible company who has a place of business, is licensed and carries the proper insurance, like workers comp, and will give you a written contract.

That contract should have all the necessary details including the start time to install the shutters. Since your shutters will be custom made, consider that the contractor will need more of a down payment. Don’t pay in full until they complete the job to your satisfaction.

Window Frames: Which One Is Right For Your Home?

If you're a homeowner who wants to make a dramatic change or difference in their home there are number of things you can do. Many of these things also improve the quality of your home's appearance and can be accomplished at wide variety of prices. The one way to both improve the appearance and make a difference inside of a home is to work with your home's window frames.

Believe it or not homes with window frames that are worn or damaged can actually allow wind and rain in and they let all the heat and cool air out. New windows frames can cut air infiltration down to almost zero and when installed with advanced glazings, these new windows can slash nearly 40% off of heating and cooling bills year-round. Furthermore many new windows can free a home from its periodic painting and even rival the fine craftsmanship found in cabinetry.

When it comes to choices for window frames, homeowners have a bigger selection than ever to choose from. Manufacturers have given homeowners more choices through framing materials, different types of glazing, and of course installation options. A good example of this is window replacements. In years and decades past replacing window frames simply meant replacing an old or damaged frame with a new one of exactly the same kind, shape, and design. In more modern times however homeowners looking at window replacement can select from virtually any style, material, and installation. Speaking of installation, homeowners are no longer limited to the old-fashioned "rip out and replace" technique.

The materials used in the construction of window frames has grown exponentially in recent years. No longer is wood the only choice for homeowners. These days homeowners looking at replacing their frames or adding new ones to their home can select from vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, and even composite plastic. Each of these materials carries pros and cons and selecting the right one can be difficult for some homeowners. Vinyl window frames for example are the most affordable and one of the most durable though they aren't always the most aesthetically pleasing. Wood frames on the other hand are far more expensive and look great but are hard to care for and can begin decaying rather quickly. While the choices are many and will remain so for the foreseeable future, many window frame manufacturers now offer vinyl replacement kits as those types of frames are far more durable than they wood counterparts.

When homeowners begin shopping for window frames they should look for uniform color throughout the frames they are interested in. Also important is to look for joints that are welded with heat instead of joints that are held together with screws and fasteners. While the more affordable screw and fastener joints might seem like the economical way to go, these can easily begin to fall apart and look ragged after only a short time around a homes windows. Homeowners should also take careful notice of blemishes on the frames they are interested in and try to purchase window frames whose finger joints are invisible.

Homeowners interested in completing a window frame replacement project on a small budget might also wish to consider aluminum frames for their windows. Many aluminum frames carry a cost that's comparable to vinyl frames but aluminum remains slightly more durable than vinyl. The only real drawback to using aluminum window framing is that they conduct heat very easily and can be dangerous in homes where careless people and children reside. They're also prone to condensation which can cause wear and tear which is something many homeowners might want to avoid lest they don't mind replacing their window frames at regular intervals. Aluminum frames should essentially be the choice for homeowners who live in warmer climates were cooling bills are far more expensive than their heating bills.

One type of window frame that homeowners often overlook but are pleasantly surprised by is fiberglass. Fiberglass and composite window frames are the newest options on the market and are made from materials very similar to those found on car bumpers. Additionally these types of window frames are both strong and maintenance free just like their vinyl counterparts. If that isn't enough to convince a homeowner to go with fiberglass or composite window frames, their energy efficiency exceeds that of even vinyl and they're extremely affordable too.

Homeowners who want to replace their window frames or have new ones installed will likely be working with a professional as installation alone is backbreaking work that requires precise measurements and fittings. While homeowners may feel there are too many choices available for them after digesting the information in an article such as this one, a professional will help them determine what works best for their home and for their budget.

Beautiful and Affordable Plantation Shutters

You rarely, if ever, see the words beautiful and cheap when describing plantation shutters. They are available, and all you have to do is search for them. When you find those that are beautiful, and expensive, keep looking.

The varieties are too numerous to count in both materials and color. The interior shutters will be cheaper than those installed on the outside of your home because you won’t have to deal with the weather. Normally their use is strictly to control the light and heat or cold from entering your home. The cheaper shutters open or close by turning the louvers by hand with the shutters in the desired position; and you will not need a remote control because they are so easy to move, and one louver controls them all.

There will also be an element of privacy and security when the shutters are in their closed and locked (from the inside) position. Possibly when a person is looking to break into your home, they view the interior shutters as an additional barrier, they will go onto your neighbor’s house where only glass prevents their entrance.

So the most important decision you’ll have to make will be to buy ready-made shutters from the local hardware store, or shop the local professionals who know the ins and outs of custom shutters. The professional will tell you what will work for your area, and also what is not suitable.

If wood is your choice and your shutters must follow the décor in your home, there are still many choices. Shutters painted or stained with simple or elaborate modern designs are there for the asking. There are shutters that need assembling and installed by the homeowner, and they normally come with instructions.

When you want a finished look without looking like those old venetian blinds, with the louvers controlled by cords running through the existing louver that is where the similarity ends. The louvers on most shutters are wider, easier to clean and adjust.

So choose wisely, go online to see pictures and see what you like and how the shutters will change your entire room. Guests will believe you changed your entire home, when in fact you only dressed the windows. Intelligent choices are wise because those shutters will last much longer than curtains or drapes.

However if you still want additional coverage, side drapes or curtains add dramatic tributes to your windows without covering your plantation shutters.

Plantation Shutters Date Back Further Than You Think

When you think of Plantation Shutters, you probably think of the first ones used in the mid 1800’s and they did use them on their plantations. However there is evidence that the shutters were around in 3000 B.C. in Greece and they were made of marble.

It’s hard to imagine marble plantation shutters because they would be so heavy and the frames to hold them up would outlast the house. Why they called them shutters is also hard to believe because they didn’t open or close like those we use today. Possibly they had to remove them entirely to open the window. Glass too was in its infancy so they may have one or the other, but rarely both. Considering the cost of marble and the effort to carve the shutters, only the rich could ever afford them.

Even in the plantation days only the rich could afford them, and their slaves installed them. They would have installed them on the exterior window that provided privacy and security when they closed them across the window. Those shutters are still available today, but you may never see them in a state like California, except in the mountain areas unless they mounted them directly onto the house.

Interior shutters are highly valued and open and close easily. In the closed position the louvers can slant to allow light in or closed to keep the light out or any position in between. Privacy, security and the ability to control light, and the weather offer selections as well as beauty. They never refer to Interior shutters as plantation shutters.

Plantation shutters normally swing open or closed and once in the desired position, they lock them in place to keep them stationary. Marble is never part of the equation, but the availability of various types of materials and colors are, and the homeowner makes those selections.

You’ll also find exterior shutters that attach directly to the home. They are there to give the home a uniqueness that no other home in the neighborhood shares. They don’t swing open or closed, and the louvers don’t move either.

When you decide to have plantation shutters installed on your home, you may want to contact a professional who is versed on all types and colors to match or contrast your home. There are ready-made shutters available at hardware stores, or if your windows are custom, the professional, with his knowledge, will fill the bill.

Customized Exterior Wood Shutters

Beautiful exterior wood shutters have more advantages than beauty. The customized shutters keep your home warm in the winter and cool in hot summer days. If you have been searching for the right shutter for your home, look no further. Before you even contact the professional do your own homework, and the Internet is a good place to begin.
The type of wood you choose for your shutters is element to getting the job done.  When you hire a professional who knows wood you may pay more, but you’ll be happier with the job because the quality of the hard woods they choose. Many cut the entire shutter out of a solid piece of wood knowing it will last longer and work harder. No pun intended.

Types of suitable wood include mahogany, cherry, cedar, maple, oak, poplar, and teak. Softer woods don’t last as long and they defeat the purpose of the shutter because they leak and don’t stop the transfer of air into or out of your home.

You probably already know that your windows are the one place vulnerable to the weather. With customized exterior wood shutters that fit your windows like a glove, weather losses its power, and the shutters protect your window from breakage as well.

We’re talking about functional exterior wood shutters here. The ones that close tightly and open to allow light into your home. There are nonfunctional shutters that you attach directly to your home and their sole purpose is beauty. When you close and lock the customized wood shutters they protect your home with an additional layer of security against break-ins.

Here in California you may not see an abundance of exterior shutters that close, but when you do, you realize that they balance the frame’s architectural style and add to the curb appeal of the home.

After you have researched the shutters and if you still haven’t decided whether you want them, talk to a professional. Those contractors who customize the shutters to fit every window as they tell you their advantages. Many do the entire job from start to finish. When you compare the hardware store’s shutters with those that have been customized for your own home, you’ll be able to see the difference in quality and durability. Even if you have to paint them yourself to contrast or match the exterior color scheme you won’t be sorry you went with the knowledgeable professional.

Just remember you can’t compare apples and oranges even in price. The same holds true with customized exterior wood shutters.

Use Professional Color Schemes For Home and Exterior Shutters

You know you’re planning to paint your home and the most important question you have to answer is what color will make your home look like a professional job. Today there are many options. Paint manufacturers have invested millions of dollars to improve their exterior grade paints and give their customers numerous options of modern colors. Stores offer booklets and even paint chips that allow clients to make the best choices for their homes.

The home improvement centers have pint size cans to help when the paint chips don’t tell the complete story of course those are not free. Others suggest that you buy a quart of their paint and paint a small section before you invest in the gallons for the final job. You can find the same information online with tools to help you make those decisions. For some the decisions are as troublesome as doing the actual job.

What issues should you consider when preparing to make such a drastic change in the color scheme of your home? First, consider the color of the roof, because of the expense; your roof remains the same over many years. The landscape surrounding your home should be another consideration. You’ll want your home to stand out and be totally different than your neighbors, so don’t copy them.

Once you’ve made the decision for the primary color, you’ll want to decide on the exterior trim that usually contrasts instead of an exact match. When you decide to add exterior shutters you must decided on the type of shutters that would best suit your home. There are vinyl and wood shutters, and they each have their own advantages. There are functional shutters with hinges to open and close, and non-functional shutters that are stationary. The color of the exterior shutters normally matches the front door.

Wood shutters are more expensive, but choose a premium grade wood shutter. Vinyl shutters now come in more than one color with the color molded throughout they don’t fade easily. They sell them pre-finished and the online company’s mail color samples when requested.

When you make your own personal preferences keep in mind resale appeal. In other words paint with popular modern uplifting paint without going into bright gaudy and extravagant colors that are showy and unpopular. You want your home to have a quiet elegance that stands out in the neighborhood and has the look of professionalism.

Orange County Shutters: Choose Between Blinds and Shutters

Most people know the differences between blinds and indoor shutters. They are made from different materials and that more than anything else affects the price. Shutters cost more, are sturdier and are usually made from various types of wood that can be painted and repainted, or, aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl that never need painting.

Blinds on the other hand are usually much cheaper and come in a variety of materials and colors. They are not as sturdy as the indoor shutters and will have to be changed more often. When you consider blinds for your home, you may remember the venetian blinds of the past.

Similar to today’s blinds, but no longer will you see them in many homes or offices.

Interior shutters, whether wood or vinyl, are attached to a frame on the outside of the window and are hinged to the frame itself. Normally there are two shutters per window, and they swing on hinges and either open or closed. The slats themselves are wider than the blinds and you open them by moving one slat that controls all of them. You have the option of slanting, opening, or closing the slats while the shutter is in the closed position.

They attach the blinds on the top and inside of the window. An attached cord controls the blinds and easily pulls the blind up to open, or lowers it to close the entire height of the window. An attached bar twists to control the feature of opening or slanting the slats to control the amount of light coming in.
The tightly closed slats overlap on the blinds and control the light. Users or small children can damage the blinds by twisting the slats if they aren’t careful.

Many people prefer to install blinds on their windows and then install curtains or draperies to make the window look finished. However you more often than not see the shutters or blinds alone on a window.
Like we said, blinds don’t last as long as the interior shutter. Often they guarantee the shutters for life. When you choose shutters over blinds, you’ve made the decision that the shutters will remain on the windows if you sell the home. They become a permanent fixture of the entire room the moment they’re installed.

When you choose interior shutters, consider them an investment because they add value to your home. If blinds are your choice, they can be an added benefit as well, and the choice is yours.

Internal Home Enviornment

With Spring officially just a couple of weeks away now is the perfect time to begin thinking about environmental control for your home. As the weather begins to warm up you may notice that some rooms in your home stay warmer than others while others become cold or don't retain any heat at all.

While there are many ways to control the internal environment of a home, one of the best ways to do so is to ensure that your home's windows are covered properly. Some homeowners may utilize draperies which can keep the intense sunlight of spring and summer out a room while others will simply choose cheap blinds to do the same. The problem with these two choices however is that neither blocks out light very well nor helps maintain a comfortable temperature in any given room.

Shutters on the other hand do both in spades and depending on which style and material you choose for your windows, shutters can help keep the home warm at night by trapping heat and cool during the hot spring and summer days by keeping heat out in trapping cool air in.

If you're a homeowner who wants reduce energy costs and maintain a comfortable environment without spending an arm or leg then be sure to contact us to discuss shutters for your home.

Go Green with Window Treatments

Going green does not necessarily mean it will cost you more money. In the long run it will save on utility bills. If you invest in quality products they last longer and you won’t have to replace them as often. When you put extra thought into the choice of window treatments simply think green and you’ll come out ahead of the game.

Before you decide what type of window treatments you like, you must consider the use of the room. For instance, a hobby center needs more light than a media room where you view television and/or movies. In your bedroom for a day sleeper, dark draperies work well to block out the sun. A home office needs subdued light to keep out the glare; and the window plays a large part in all of your choices.

When there’s a spare room in your home that you previously saved for guests, transform it into a place that has usable space. Possibly you want a private space for study or creativity then you may prefer a bright cheerful room. Your window treatments are easily transformed and green helps to keep it that way.

Exterior blinds help deflect the sun from your windows in the summer, but removed to allow sunlight into the room for warmth in the winter. Window awnings or overhangs work in the same way when installed approximately two feet above each window.

Light colored drapes, shades or blinds in the interior also help deflect the heat. Darker colors absorb the heat inside; all right for the winter, but not in the heat of the summer.

Adjustable louvered shutters or blinds provide you with control over the elements. Tight fitting insulated shades that don’t allow the transfer of light and heat into your room work well and help in the winter as well, keeping the heat inside.

Landscaping when trees help with shade in the summer and allow the sun to come through when the leaves fall in the autumn.

Going green doesn’t have to mean all or nothing. Everything you do toward becoming green will help not only your family, your home, but the environment as well. There are contractors or interior designers who can help you reach your goals. If you plan on remodeling your home you might consider replacing your windows with double paned windows that have a sunscreen included.

Look for efficiency and economy not simply price and remember whatever you do plan on it lasting for a long time.
