Internal Home Enviornment

With Spring officially just a couple of weeks away now is the perfect time to begin thinking about environmental control for your home. As the weather begins to warm up you may notice that some rooms in your home stay warmer than others while others become cold or don't retain any heat at all.

While there are many ways to control the internal environment of a home, one of the best ways to do so is to ensure that your home's windows are covered properly. Some homeowners may utilize draperies which can keep the intense sunlight of spring and summer out a room while others will simply choose cheap blinds to do the same. The problem with these two choices however is that neither blocks out light very well nor helps maintain a comfortable temperature in any given room.

Shutters on the other hand do both in spades and depending on which style and material you choose for your windows, shutters can help keep the home warm at night by trapping heat and cool during the hot spring and summer days by keeping heat out in trapping cool air in.

If you're a homeowner who wants reduce energy costs and maintain a comfortable environment without spending an arm or leg then be sure to contact us to discuss shutters for your home.

Go Green with Window Treatments

Going green does not necessarily mean it will cost you more money. In the long run it will save on utility bills. If you invest in quality products they last longer and you won’t have to replace them as often. When you put extra thought into the choice of window treatments simply think green and you’ll come out ahead of the game.

Before you decide what type of window treatments you like, you must consider the use of the room. For instance, a hobby center needs more light than a media room where you view television and/or movies. In your bedroom for a day sleeper, dark draperies work well to block out the sun. A home office needs subdued light to keep out the glare; and the window plays a large part in all of your choices.

When there’s a spare room in your home that you previously saved for guests, transform it into a place that has usable space. Possibly you want a private space for study or creativity then you may prefer a bright cheerful room. Your window treatments are easily transformed and green helps to keep it that way.

Exterior blinds help deflect the sun from your windows in the summer, but removed to allow sunlight into the room for warmth in the winter. Window awnings or overhangs work in the same way when installed approximately two feet above each window.

Light colored drapes, shades or blinds in the interior also help deflect the heat. Darker colors absorb the heat inside; all right for the winter, but not in the heat of the summer.

Adjustable louvered shutters or blinds provide you with control over the elements. Tight fitting insulated shades that don’t allow the transfer of light and heat into your room work well and help in the winter as well, keeping the heat inside.

Landscaping when trees help with shade in the summer and allow the sun to come through when the leaves fall in the autumn.

Going green doesn’t have to mean all or nothing. Everything you do toward becoming green will help not only your family, your home, but the environment as well. There are contractors or interior designers who can help you reach your goals. If you plan on remodeling your home you might consider replacing your windows with double paned windows that have a sunscreen included.

Look for efficiency and economy not simply price and remember whatever you do plan on it lasting for a long time.

Shutters And Home Privacy

The one aspect of installing shutters or some other type of window decor in a home that often goes overlooked is privacy. These days privacy is a big deal and quite frequently in the news and while it may be difficult to maintain privacy online and other in aspects of life, keeping your personal sanctum free and safe from people who would look in both casually and with more unscrupulous plans in mind is not difficult at all.

Of course different types of window decor offer different levels of privacy. Things like shutters, both interior and exterior, can be closed which makes it difficult if not impossible for outsiders to see into a home through windows. Other window decor such as drapes and blinds also offer a fair amounts of privacy though through wear and tear and even human contact these types of window decor are easily moved or worn to the point where they no longer obscure an onlookers vision into a home.

Should you be a homeowner who values privacy and needs some type of window decor to achieve their privacy goals, please be sure to contact us as will be happy to help.

Reduce Heating And Cooling Costs With New Shutters

Do you live in an area that experiences particularly cold winter's? Many people do and those people find themselves running heaters constantly only to watch the heat dissipate rather quickly through windows. Homeowners living in these types of scenarios and experiencing these types of frustrations do have an option available to them. This option is of course to have shutters installed.

Both interior and exterior shutters can help homeowners trap heat in their homes and keep the cold out during the winter months. Likewise during the summer months homeowners can utilize the same shutters to keep excessive heat out of their home and the cool air generated by their air-conditioning unit inside of the home.

While the initial cost of having shutters constructed and installed may cause apprehension in some homeowners, these homeowners need to understand that the shutters will pay for themselves rather quickly. Having good shutters installed reduce electric bills that have run high due to prolonged and excessive heater and air conditioning usage.

If you're sick and tired of running your heat and air nonstop in order to create only a semi-comfortable indoor environment then consider shutters and consider contacting us for assistance!

Decorating With Interior Shutters

When you decorate with interior window shutters, you add a permanent décor to your rooms, one that can be opened entirely, or in the closed position, the slats can be open or closed. You can also add draperies or simply drape a thin curtain across the top of them to give them a finished look. However you don’t need anything else on your window. The interior shutters will add another layer against the heat or cold from the outside. They also add privacy, and will block the sunlight.

The type of shutter you choose will be wood that can be painted to blend or contrast the remainder of the room. You can paint the entire interior wooden shutters before you install them. Vinyl would be your second choice, and you never have to paint the vinyl shutters. They may need dusting or even wiping off with a damp cloth, but that’s all. You don’t have the variety of colors with vinyl and they normally come in tones of white. The wooden shutters should be dusted regularly and unless they are installed in a room where there is steam and/or dampness, the vinyl shutters would be preferable.

The interior shutters can be easily installed by a ‘Do It Yourselfer’ and you wouldn’t need many tools to do the job. If you mount the shutters on the inside of the window box, then all you need to do is secure the screws to the 2x4 frame of the window. If the shutter will be attached outside the window frame, then it will need to be carefully mounted with drywall anchors or attached to a stud to insure stability. Normal hinges will hold the shutters in place.

Without doubt decorating with interior shutters will add uniqueness to your home. They can be seen from the outside, and on the inside you can adjust the light coming into your home. They can be closed to insure privacy or open wide to allow the warmth of the sun to penetrate your home on a cold winter day.

They also add another layer to protect you from the harsh heat of summer days or the cold that blasts against your outside window. In today’s world where you need to control the cost of your utilities, and still have the beauty and privacy of your own desire and tastes within your home, interior shutters are the way to go.

Selecting Exterior Shutters

After having talked quite extensively about how exterior shutters can be utilized in homes, we're now going to offer some tips on how to actually select exterior shutters. Anyone who's ever shopped for exterior shutters would tell you that the number of brands, pricing, and qualities to consider is exhausting. Therefore choosing exterior shutters that work for your home, budget, and personal tastes can be somewhat arduous.

As with any home improvement project homeowners need to consider not only the most cost-effective option but the quality and longevity of the shutters they're interested in as well. Homeowners must also keep in mind that exterior shutters are available in many different shapes and materials and while a cheaper material like vinyl might be the most cost-effective choice, cheaper vinyl shutters often look plastic. In sharp contrast however wood shutters will cost a little bit more and will be much easier on the eyes but they are prone to warping, cracking, and peeling after only a short amount of time.

Should a homeowner select wood or even metal shutters for the exterior of their homes they will need to peruse through a myriad of different woods and metals, all of which offer very different lifespans and quality. Maintenance of their new exterior shutters is something homeowners must consider as well when going over what material will work best for them.

A homeowner may know what type of general exterior shutters they won't see on their home but they may be forced to make compromises when they consider all of the aforementioned information. When in doubt it's best to speak with a professional and should you have any questions about the many different types of exterior shutters out there please be sure to contact us so that we can point you in the right direction!

In the past we've talked a bit about different types shutters such as storm shutters and those made of metal and how they can protect the home from things like storms and in general bad weather. Today however we'd like to talk about aluminum and roller shutters not for protection against storms but rather for protection against unscrupulous individuals who seek access to your home or business while you're out.

Even in the best of neighborhoods crime and theft happens frequently. Utilizing motorized aluminum and/or roller shutters to a home will be more than enough to discourage would-be burglars or other criminals from even considering entering your home.

Hurricane Shutters: Protecting Homes And Families

Homeowners who live in parts of the world that are prone to hurricane activity face a large uphill battle. Hurricanes can strike during anytime of year and as such homeowners must invest in barricading their homes against the high winds and the debris that most hurricane carries with them.

Hurricane shutters sometimes referred to as hurricane coverings are used by homeowners in these areas to protect their houses from structural damage caused by these gargantuan storms. Essentially hurricane shutters prevent windows from being broken by flying objects during a hurricane which is important although protecting a home's windows may not be enough. In most cases however hurricane shutters, which are made from steel and aluminum, are enough to protect a home's occupants against not only shattering glass but potentially fatal debris thrown at the home by hurricanes winds.

There are some homeowners who opt to use plywood as a makeshift hurricane shutters though they may not always be strong enough to keep windows from shattering and debris out of a home. There are even those hurricane shutters which are motorized and can be folded away when not in use.

Should you have any questions about hurricane shutters or about shutters in general please consider contacting us as we are experts and will be happy to assist you in any way we can.

What Are Exterior Shutters Made Of?

In continuing with our discussion of exterior shutters, many people who've never purchased them often wonder what materials these types of shutters are made from. The general consensus is that all exterior shutters are made from the same materials as those used in the construction of interior shutters.

This consensus is fairly accurate as exterior shutters are available in aluminum, iron, wood, and in some cases vinyl. The type of shutt a home owner selects will largely be dependent on budget, personal tastes, and desired length of investment. As most of us know even the most costly and well put together wood and metal will shutters face an uphill battle with regards to things like moisture and heat. These battles leave these types of shutters warped, cracks, and peeling. Vinyl shutters on the other hand require very little care and last a great length of time before ever needing to be replaced.

The area in which a home is situated in also plays a factor in what type of exterior shutter a homeowner will want to purchase. Areas with extreme weather will require not only shutters made of a specific type of material but a specialized exterior shutter as well. With so many choices available with regards to exterior shutters its a good idea to consult a professional before purchasing any all.

Should you have any questions please be sure to contact us as will be more than happy to assist you in anyway we can!

Exterior Shutters: For Your Eyes Only?

The majority of our blog posts when dealing with shutters deals mainly with those of an interior nature. As many homeowners are aware of however there are also exterior shutters which can be used not only control light and set ambience within a room but control temperature and even function as a decorative piece on the home.

Exterior shutters are usually much more vibrantly colored and designed than their interior brethren. As mentioned previously this is due to the fact that in most cases exterior shutters function as eye candy first while all other functions are secondary. This is not to say that they can't be used effectively to control temperature and moods of a room but generally speaking homeowners purchase exterior shutters for aesthetic reasons above all others.

We are experts in all things shutters and should you have any questions regarding the differences between exterior and interior shutters please do not hesitate to contact us as we will be happy to answer any you may have.

Installing Your New Orange County Shutters Yourself

Though many of our customers hire us to install the Orange County shutters that they've purchased from us, there is a small group of them that prefers to install their new shutters themselves. While we always recommend professional installation to our customers, we understand that some people prefer to do it themselves or simply don't want to spend additional money on installation which is why we offer the following tips.

Installing Orange County shutters isn't a very difficult process if you keep the following in mind!
  • Following Instructions: Any homeowner who aims to install their new shutters themselves should follow the detailed instructions that accompany the shutters they've purchased. Those that deviate from the instructions will always encounter problems.
  • Measuring shutters to fit your windows: The measuring process is the first thing that a do-it-yourselfer needs to deal with. Precise measurements are the key to a successful and proper installation.
  • Determining the preferred type of installation: Homeowners will also need to determine whether they want to install their new Orange County shutters on the inside of the window opening or on the outside of the window opening. Both types of installations have their pros and cons though most professionals usually recommend that homeowners have their shutters installed on the inside of the window opening.
  • Taking it slow/Accuracy: Measurements are a huge part of shutter installation and can be difficult to read at times. Measuring more than once or asking a friend to measure the same thing you just did will help ensure that your measurements are accurate. Rushing through the installation of your shutters can result in damage to your shutters, damage to your window, and can cost you more money. This is why we recommend that every do-it-yourselfer take it slow and even contact a professional when they find themselves frustrated or unsure of anything.
Should you have any questions about installing your new shutters be sure to contact us as will be happy to help!

Let Your Window Coverings Compliment Your Room's Decor

We talk a lot about how things like window blinds, shutters, and draperies can be used to create atmospheres and moods in specific rooms throughout a home. What we haven't touched on however is how these types of window dressings, along with her other brethren, can also be used to complement lighting fixtures and decor in a specific room.

More often than every single room in a home features a different decor. Usually the decor in a given room will be reflective of the person who occupies it most frequently. In all rooms, even those that are used by a number of people like kitchens and living rooms, it's important to make sure that window dressings aren't in sharp contrast with the type of lighting in the room as well as the lighting fixtures and the decor of the room as well.

Individuals must take care to not utilize window dressings and coverings that either darken a room too much or allow too much light in. Individuals must also take note of how much or how often lighting fixtures are being used during daylight hours and adjust their window coverings accordingly. There is then the aesthetics to be considered. You don't want white colored window coverings in her room that utilizes predominantly dark paint or wallpaper. Essentially individuals want to make sure that their window coverings complement or work with a room rather than standing in contrast.

If your unsure of what type of window coverings to utilize in a specific room in your home please be sure to contact us that we may be of assistance.

Darkening A Room: Which Window Dressings Do You Use?

There are many individuals who enjoy a dark room. There are many reasons why these individuals may enjoy it as well. Some people find the lack of light comfortable and soothing while others would say it makes it easier to work in that particular space. Still there are other individuals who enjoy a dark room simply because the less light that enters the room the less heat enters the room.

For individuals who enjoy dark rooms or look forward to enjoying one the question comes down to what type of shades, drapery, blinds, or shutters they want to utilize to achieve the right amount of darkening.

While draperies, especially those of a darker color, absorbed quite a bit of light they do allow a fair amount of light into a room because they do not sit directly against a window and light escapes from behind drapery as well as its sides. With window blinds individuals will find that although they can darken the room significantly, light tends to seep through blinds even when they're closed firmly. Shutters also do a good job of blocking out light but do allow some light to escape into the rooms in which they are used.

The type of window dressing an individual want to use will depend greatly on how much light they want to allow into a room and what type of mood they are trying to create. Should you be unsure of which one you need to use please be sure to contact us so that we may help.
